A Honda CR 250 is one of the highest rated dirt bikes on the market. The engine oil must be changed accordingly for proper engine function.

The engine on a 1998 Honda CR 250 dirt bike is a 249 cubic inch (cc) two-stroke engine with a lot of power. This motorcycle is made for high stress track racing. The engine oil lubricates the crank case which is one component that powers the engine. The engine uses 1 1/2 quarts Honda two-stroke engine oil and needs to be changed every 20 hours of riding as stated in the owner's manual.

Step One: Prepping the bike

Park the Honda CR 250 on level ground and allow the engine and exhaust to completely cool for about an hour. Place paper towels on the ground under the engine and drain valve. The drain valve is on the bottom of the engine in clear view. Place a engine oil drain container on the paper towels under the drain valve.

Tip: If the engine, exhaust or oil is hot, then you will get burned during this process.

Step Two: Draining the engine oil

Remove the round black oil cap from the left side of the crank case. The cap is toward the top of the crank case in clear view. Remove the drain valve nut from the bottom of the engine using a ratchet and a 1/2 inch standard socket. Completely drain the engine oil into the pan. Once the oil has been drained, then replace the drain valve nut and tighten it until snug.

Tip: Removing the oil cap will relieve pressure from inside the crank case and allow the engine oil drain faster.

Step Three: Filling the crank case

Insert a clean standard oil funnel into the crank case through the hole where the oil cap was. Slowly pour 1 1/2 quarts Honda two-stroke engine oil into the crank case. Pouring the oil to fast will cause an overflow and make a mess. Once all the fresh engine oil is in the crank case, then replace the oil cap to the crank case.

Tip: This motorcycle doesn't have an oil filter.

Step Four: Starting the engine

Remove the engine oil drain pan from under the engine and pick up the paper towels. Pull the kick start from the right side of the engine. Turn the throttle back 1/4 inch and force the kick start down slowly three times to set the compression. Kick down on the kick start a fourth time to start the engine. Allow the engine the run for about five minutes to run the new oil through the engine.

Any Honda Power Sports dealer will have everything that you will need to change the engine oil on this bike correctly.
